Public Works prepares annual crash summaries using data provided by the Oregon Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).  According to the most current full-year information available from DMV, there were a total of 1,660 crashes in Eugene in 2008, down from 1,821 crashes in 2006 and well below the 10-year average of 1,973 crashes per year. However, 751 injuries were reported in 2008, considerably above the 10-year average of 675 injuries per year. The report also showed five fatal crashes, 70 crashes involving bicycles (69 of them resulting in injuries), and 25 crashes involving pedestrians. The 2008 statistics includes one fatality related to a bike crash and one pedestrian fatality.

City gives LCC green light on 'pit' development across from library

The Eugene City Council voted unanimously Monday night to give Lane Community College a shot at succeeding where others have failed: filling the pit across 10th Avenue from the Eugene Public Library.

LCC wants to build its new downtown center at the former Sears store site. The 80,000 square foot facility would house energy management and "green jobs" programs relocated from the main LCC campus. The LCC Small Business Development Center Network would move in -- and even student housing may be in the mix.

Concrete panel work closes Agate Street to northbound traffic at 24th Avenue

The northbound lane on Agate Street between 24th and 23rd avenues in southeast Eugene is closed for about a week while Public Works crews repair a concrete panel in the area.l

Eugene has approximately 30 miles of concrete streets in its 530-mile street system.  Each year, the Eugene Public Works Maintenance Division schedules repairs based on a variety of factors, including amount of damage, use of the street, and availability of funds. Typically, the repair work includes removing the old pavement, making minor subsurface repairs if needed, pouring new concrete, and keeping traffic off the new surface until the concrete has thoroughly cured, usually about a week.
