Restaurant Deals

Submitted by Laura Rillos on Tuesday, September 29th, 9:40 am

One reason I love living in Eugene is the local restaurant scene.  I like trying new dishes and cocktails, but I also like having a full wallet.

So I like to go to happy hours and find good deals, like the burger and brew nights at Sixth Street Grill and The Vintage (which has a burger and TWO brews).  What are your favorites?  Any sweet restaurant deals I should check out?

For breakfast, I'd recommend the potato scramble at the Jiffy Market in south Eugene or eggs ala Mexicana at Cafe Sienna on 13th near campus. Not special deals, just good grub for the money (for those rare weekend mornings when we don't want to cook our own breakfast).

I hate saying this because I don't want to crowds to show up, but Cornucopia is a hidden breakfast gem.  It's not usually crowded because I don't think most people know they even serve bfast.

Their "pork roll" sandwhich is amazing.  And cheap (I think $5.95 w/ homefries).  It's this delicious mystery meat substance that the waitress tells me comes from a farm in New Jersey.  I know it's pig, and beyond that I don't care.  They serve it on a delcious roll with a fried egg and cheese.  Easily my favorite breakfast in Eugene.

It'll also knock a hangover right out of you.

Word of warning, they stop serving breakfast at 11:30 a.m.  So don't be late!

So here is a thought: What if once a month KVAL News held a morning news meeting at a breakfast restaurant in a different neighborhood? Maybe a news meeting/community meet up?

Good idea ... let the news media be the voice and collector of public opinion in person.

I have to admit when it comes to great bar food, the O-bar is my choice! Come on sometimes you just have to have a greasy burger and the food at this University student staple is great. Not to mention a really nice staff and chill environment to boot!

Not sure if it's really a special deal but, I have found Chipotle offers a lot of food for not a lot of green!

I stood in line for over 2 hours the first day they opened to get a free burrito...crazy I know but, it was well worth the wait.

The burritos are enough for two meals and the three tacos served with chips and salsa is a hearty meal for around 6 bux.

The Humble Beagle at 24th and Hilyard (next to Sundance and Rhythm and Blooms) had a Monday beer and burger and Sunday beer and pizza special on the menu. Basically, a burger or pizza plus a microbrew for a buck. That saves you $2.75 off the menu price for a premium pint. Not too shabby a savings.

We ate there for the first time Thursday and had the Shuk Sandwich (yum) and the Fisherman's Stew (double yum). No special price, but plenty delicious.

I couldn't agree more about the Park St. Cafe. No special deals there though. I would recommend the Rabbit for Happy Hour. You must sit in the bar for excellent cocktails for 5 dollars and the best fries in town for 2 dollars. We often enjoy the steamed oysters for $4 dollars (I think).

We've been enjoying Holy Donuts!  They are open late and seems like they always throw some extra treat on our plate. I love the mini pear fritters. My wife can't stop ordering the cream filled donuts. They are in the Mid Town area. If you haven't tried these donuts do stop in. You will be glad you did.  It's about time we had a real donut shop!

Try Aquilla and Priscillas in Springfield on Q Street in the Safeway shoping center. A&P have the best sandwiches for lunch and dinner. Pasta is good, too. I think they still serve whole wheat pasta upon request. I have also heard they make a great breakfast. THey are not open Sunday and do not serve alcohol, good coffee drinks though and a pleasant atmosphere.
