Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Lane Community College Downtown Campus start Friday, March 4, at 10:30 a.m. with comments in the Eugene Public Library Bascom/Tykeson Room, followed by a ceremonial dirt-tossing into the pit on the site across the street at 11:15 a.m., and a reception afterwards in the Atrium Building lobby.
Participating in the ceremonies will be Lane President Mary Spilde, Lane Board of Education Chair Tony McCown, Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy, Governor's Office Education Policy Advisor Nancy Golden, U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley, and U.S. Representative Peter DeFazio.
The Lane Community College Downtown Campus is regarded as a landmark project for education, business and the community. The project includes a 90,000-square-feet academic building and an 87,000-square-feet housing hall. Construction begins this month on a fast-track schedule targeting completion for fall 2012. The combined total investment is estimated at $53 million.
