Artists want to fill vacant storefronts downtown

A group of local artists is turning blight into beauty by placing sculptures inside vacant buildings downtown.

The first installation of the Eugene Storefront Art Project opened Wednesday: an iron sculpture representing stunted progress inside a jewelry store that's sat vacant for a year.

The idea is to create a more colorful community and, hopefully, attract potential buyers to some of these properties -- many of which have sat empty for years.

DIVA declines to buy building from Lord Leebrick Theatre Co.

Renewed negotiations between Lord Leebrick Theatre Company and the Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts (DIVA) regarding a sale of the building at Broadway and Olive Streets concluded Tuesday with DIVA’s Board of Directors declining to purchase the property.

DIVA’s Board of Directors met on March 2 to discuss terms offered by Lord Leebrick. Following the meeting, DIVA Board President Randy Stender called the Theatre Company’s Board President, Connie Bennett, to say that DIVA “is not in a position to enter into a sales agreement."

The property is one of two tax lots purchased in a highly publicized sale by property developers Tom Connor and Donald Woolley to Lord Leebrick in March 2009.  “Since Lord Leebrick bought the property, our hope has been that we could also help DIVA secure a permanent home,” said Willis.

Deadline to file for Eugene City Council, EWEB board coming up

The deadline to file to run for Eugene City Council and two Eugene Water and Electric Board seats is Thursday, and so far only three of the six races on the May 18 primary ballot have drawn more than one candidate, according to the city recorder's office.

Candidates first file a prospective petition, then circulate the petition to gather 25 signatures from registered voters in the ward.

Candidates have until March 4 to complete their filing and petition for city office, according to the Eugene city recorder's Web site.

The Oregon Secretary of State and Lane County Elections indicate candidates for state and county office have until March 9 to file for the primary election.

The May 18 ballot will also ask Lane County voters to choose County Commissioners and decide on a local option tax that would support 4-H and the Lane County Extension Service.

And in the headline race, Oregon Republicans and Democrats will select their parties' candidates for governor of Oregon.

Voters have up until 21 days prior to the election to register to vote or change their voter registration.
